This morning I heard about the sad passing of my friend and former collaborator Afrika Bambataa – from my friend and tommy boy legend @moluv4nyc – Bambataa is rightfully known as one of the Godfathers of hip hop.

I’d like to share a few of my memories of him.

Bambataa loved music, any kind of music. Early after making his acquaintance , he’d often surprise me his musical references, and while most were connected by breaks and beats, not all were ; he loved tv theme songs and broadway musicals, and he’d often entertain us in the studio with a medley of broadway hits, mashing up west side story, fiddler on the roof and bye bye birdie.

As much as Bamb was know as a dj, his super talent was that of a human blender, adlibing ideas from his vast array of influences, testifying over tracks he helped myself and John Robie put together.

In fact he was almost like Soul Sonic Forces own Phillipe Wynne , the group would perform the raps-
leaving bamb to breakdown the story- shouting grunting and sometimes even singing an endless flow of inspiring ideas over our songs like Wynne did with the spinners

These performances always left us blown away, (and with way more ideas then we could ever use).

Now it’s been said that Bambataa is one of the founding fathers of hip hop and this is absolutely correct. He definitely defined the hip hop ethos connecting the dots of the dj, the rapper, the graffiti artists and the bboy and helped direct warring gangs away from violence.

That our paths crossed was a once in a lifetime occurrence- and in tandem with Tom Silverman, John Robie Mr Biggs Pow Wow(rip) and MC Globe we somehow stumbled onto the alchemy that produced 3 magical moments- records that have lasted over 40 years and will last way beyond all the participants life’s.

This is a time to remember the magic bamb helped create, and his undeniable importance to hip hop culture. This importance is beyond reproach and should not ever be canceled.

RIP my friend and condolences to his friends and family.
